The power of collective effort takes center stage as we explore Amyra, a micro-enterprise in Bihar that has turned humble beginnings into an international success. Led by Afsana Bibi, this group is a shining example of how skill development and collaboration can transform not just livelihoods but entire communities.
Amyra: A Story of Determination, Craftsmanship, Sustainability, and Shared Prosperity
In the heart of Bhagalpur, Bihar, a story of inspiration is unfolding—a story of ten resilient women who turned a humble beginning into a thriving enterprise. This is the story of Amyra, a micro-enterprise group led by the indomitable Afsana Bibi. Formed in 2021, Amyra began with a shared dream and basic textile training through Drishtee Foundation. Today, it’s a model of growth, ingenuity, and community-driven success.
From Modest Beginnings to Global Reach
With initial support from Drishtee, Amyra’s members honed their skills, progressing from basic to advanced textile production techniques. They began by creating simple products for local markets, but their quality and craftsmanship quickly caught attention beyond Bhagalpur. By 2022, their excellence led to a partnership with Rangori, a Japan-based group. This partnership became a turning point, which brought them solar-powered machines in exchange for skilful production of undergarments, yoga wear, and unisex T-shirts.
What started with one fabric-cutting machine has since expanded to include 17 stitching machines and an overlock machine—enabling the group to meet diverse demands from both urban centers and international markets in Japan, the USA, and the UK.
A Thriving Ecosystem of Support
Amyra thrives in a community ecosystem powered by collaboration. Farah, a Vasuki (a bridge between rural producers and urban markets), plays a pivotal role in securing bulk orders for the group. Whether it’s school uniforms for local institutions or large-scale requests from urban hubs, Farah ensures a steady stream of work, earning her livelihood while supporting Amyra’s growth.
Within the group, work is organized with precision: some members focus on securing orders, others specialize in production, quality control, or record-keeping. This division of labor allows them to handle increasing demand without compromising quality—a hallmark of Amyra’s reputation.
Financial Growth and Livelihood Creation
The group’s efforts have translated into remarkable financial success. Amyra has taken returnable financial support (RFS) loans totaling nearly ₹5 lakh over the last three years, reinvesting in their enterprise. Their collective income now far exceeds the average in their area, setting a benchmark for prosperity in rural Bhagalpur.
Not just skilled in sewing and stitching, Amyra’s members have expanded their expertise to embroidery, knitting, and crochet. Their work is a testament to the power of skill development in transforming lives.
A Vision for the Future
Afsana Bibi and her team are not stopping here. Their dream is to expand Amyra further, welcoming more women into it’s fold to create livelihoods and uplift the entire community. “Our goal is not just to grow our group but to ensure that every woman in our village has the chance to stand on her own feet,” says Afsana, her voice brimming with quiet determination.
Through the Swavlamban model, Drishtee Foundation has been instrumental in nurturing such success stories. This is not just Amyra’s story—it is a call to action for building thriving ecosystems of empowerment and self-reliance across rural India.
Amyra’s success highlights what is possible when vision and community come together. But even the strongest petals need a stem to support them. Next, we look at the Swavlamban Samiti, the backbone of this movement, ensuring every effort aligns with a shared vision of progress.
